2011 M65-69
This year I have not been jumping at the same level I finished last year. I can only hope this is temporary and I can find my way over a 13' bar a few times this year. The M65 records are lower than my previous group's and should be within my reach. I didn't attend the USATF Indoor championships this year. Travel issues were just too much. Instead I took advantage of Cananda having their indoor champs in Kamloops just a couple weeks later. Although it is a long drive, it can be done in a day and the car makes travel with poles much easier; no carrying of pole tubes through airports! - John Altendorf |

This was my first competition in my new age group. Both the 3.60m and 3.70m vaults were age group indoor world records. |
May 14 | Hayward Classic Eugene, OR |
withdrew | I was looking forward to my first outdoor meet of the year. Unfortunately, on what was to be my last warm up jump, I tweaked my right quad. Ice and 30 minutes of rest was not sufficient to allow me to compete. I withdrew without any attempts. | |
Jun 25 | Portland Masters Track Classic Gresham, OR |
1st | 3.65m (12' 0") |
The weather was predicted to be overcast and cold. To our surprise, it was very comfortable. Since I still hadn't been jumping well in practice, I opened at 11'0" then jumped 11'6" and then 12' 0". I attempted 3.80m, which I thought would have been an outdoor WR. I didn't make it, and only later remembered the record had been improved from 3.78 to 3.80 and therefore would only have tied the record. Ooops! |
Jun 30 | OTC All-Comers LCC, Eugene, Oregon |
1st | 3.82m (12' 6.5") |
The weather cooperated here too. For the most part we had a nice tail wind. I opened at 11'6", then cleared 12'. The bar was set to 3.82m which should be a new record and I cleared it easily, only to have my pole knock the bar off. On my second attempt I cleared it again and properly got my pole out of harms way. The bar was raised to 13' and I bailed on my first and third trials and the second wasn't a good vault. |
Jul 16 | WMA Outdoor Championships Sacramento, California |
1st | 3.84m (12' 7") |
This improved my WR by 2cm. |
Jul 28 | OTC All-Comers LCC, Eugene, Oregon |
1st | 3.89m (12' 9") |
This was a season PB but not enough certified officials were on hand for it to count as a record. |
Aug 13 | High Desert Classic Bend, Oregon |
1st | 3.89m (12' 9") |
This time officials did all they needed so it should count as a WR. The weather was hot but there was a nice tail wind most of the time. |
